Artificial intelligence is now considered an interesting technique for the control of welding tools, particularly for the control of robots, which have the ability to self-regulate to correct positioning, support, etc.
Our Weld-IA solution is the result of work carried out with a technical center specializing in friction stir welding (FSW) and laser welding. FSW is an important welding technology, since it enables robots to weld aluminum parts, a lightweight material used in the automotive and aerospace industries, without riveting.
The quality expected of these welds is described in an ISO25239 standard, which defines tolerances for different quality classes. These classes correspond to specific uses and the associated risks in the event of a weld defect. The classes have precise tolerance values for internal porosity, overflow or material subsidence on the surface.
Weld-IA is an algorithm capable of indicating the type of defect with over 99% accuracy among internal porosity, flash, hooking, on butt or lap welds, and of calculating overflow heights to produce robot setpoints. Weld-IA qualifies every weld, reducing the cost of manual and destructive testing.
